Q & A: How Can I Get Free From Depression?
Answer:
Let’s establish something from the beginning—as a Christian, you have the right and authority to be free from depression. God has given you His armor, and you can use it to stand against the strategies of the enemy (Ephesians 6:10-18). If you put on God’s armor and pray, Satan has no chance!
However, you will notice when you read those verses in your Bible that you are required to put on the armor. God will not do it for you. A way you can put on this armor is by making the following confession daily:
“I choose to clothe myself with the whole armor of God. Therefore, I put on the belt of truth, which is the truth of God’s Word. I have on the body armor of right-standing with God through Jesus’ blood. For shoes, I put on the peace that comes from the good news—I’m fully prepared.
“I have peace with God and favor with mankind. I take the shield of faith and stop every attack of the enemy. I put on the helmet of salvation which guards and guides my will, thoughts and emotions. I take the sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God, and use it against any trial, test or temptation which comes my way.
“I speak God’s promises to me instead of speaking about problems—for greater is He that is in me, than he that is in the world.”
James 4:7 says, “So humble yourselves before God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.” Again, this is a command to you. Waiting for God to deliver you, instead of acting on what He has already done, allows Satan to get to your mind.
Follow the instructions of God’s Word and put on the armor of God yourself. Cast down any thought that raises up contrary to what God’s Word says. Capture it and make it obey, and bring into captivity every rebellious thought and teach them to obey Christ. When you do, depression will not be able to stay. (See 2 Corinthians 10:3-5.)
Bringing every thought into captivity shows us there is more to this than just taking authority over wrong thoughts. You must fill your mind with right thoughts.
Look at what Philippians 4:8 tells us to focus on continually: “Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise.”
Notice that it does not mention defeat, doubt or failure. When Satan brings thoughts that lead toward depression, immediately speak the Word of God out of your mouth and stop him before he gains any ground. This will keep oppression far from you (Isaiah 54:14).
